Language Kitchen is a workshop based art project designed and facilitated by artists Hyung-Min Yoon and Jessica Jang. Originally conceived by Yoon, as a part of her curatorial project Translation Services at 221A Artist Run Centre, the first workshop was intended to offer (specifically ESL) children a space to share their experiences and to recognise their capacity as a producer and consumer of language. Yoon’s interest in the development of ESL children is drawn from personal struggles inherent in second language acquisition. It was noticed that a child’s transient period of ESL is unlike the experience of adults and that the process of learning a new culture becomes a sophisticated negotiation.
In spring 2013, Language Kitchen collaborated with Burnaby Art Gallery to present workshops within the Burnaby school district.
